A voice over the PA was calling the next players to their pods.
"Be back in a minute - gotta throw some stuff in my locker" Jaired
called as he headed toward the back.
"Must be nice to work here" Chiisai remarked heading to the sign
in counter.
"My, My, the mighty Grasshopper is jealous I do believe" Teased
Jenny.
"Who me? Never in his dreams!" Chiisai snorted.
Isa was watching the match in progress - a pair of custom Virtual
Mektons were fighting it out in a small arena. The two tiny images
were closing on each other. A red humanoid was skimming over the
ground with large energy sword and a pistol. Opposing the red
humanoid (the computers tagged it as "Flintlock") was a squat
four-legged turreted monstrosity (tag read: Dancer").
Tiny missiles raced out of the legs of the quad and sought out
the Flintlock with suicidal glee. The Flintlock started dodging
and weaving, but a few still hit, ripping off a large sheet of
armor from the pistol arm and the torso. Still closing the Flintlock
fired its small pistol and missed the Dancer as it skipped out
of the way.
"Hey Jenny, isn't that Mark and Sue out there?" Isa gestured to
the ongoing fight.
"Think so, but I thought that Dancer wasn't finished".

Personal History:
Jennifer grew up in the post- aparteid S, africa. her family is
solidly in the working class -father is a offshore mining specialist
(equipment operator), mother tended the house. Because they didn't
have much money, jenny learned to entertain herself outdoors. Sports
came to her naturally and her parents encouraged her (and pushed
her education with threats of "no pass, no play"). Even though
Jenny's greatest talent-swordwork cost a lot of money to train
her, her parents considered it worth the effort (this has recently
borne fruit, winning awards and potential for scholarship - despite
average grades). Jenny's other passion - futball - has caused
her opponants no end of grief when she runs (over) them into the
ground. Still in the throes of puberty, Jenny is turning into
a potential man-killer; good looks, a warm personableness, and
the tendency to be an outragous flirt has resulted in many many
boys chasing her - The problem is she doesn't even notice WHY.
She discovered VM after her family moved to Geocity - a friend
at Kurosawa conned her into going to the Arena and into a pod.
Now she thinks it is almost as good as sports - she's picked up
a small job working sales to pay for this (new) habit. Her natural
skills and reflexes make her an above-average pilot for the amount
of time she puts into VM
Since she started playing she has made several friends at the
Arena where she hangs out. Isa she met a the door - helped her
in, in fact. Wondering how she could possibly play, she watched
the 'little blind girl' stomp on several opponants. After the
matches were finished she just HAD to know how she did it...and
there was a friendship born. Jenny is a bit amazed at Isa's skills
- it's never occured to her that a blind person would be incapable
of doing things, but the way Isa does not back down from much
because she is blind impresses her.
Because of her friendship with Isa, she eventually fell in with
Chiisai and Jaired. Chiisai she regards with friendly amusement
- she thinks of him as a bit of a bludgeon in his views on life,
unsubtle and a bit heavy handed. Jaired she thinks of as an unmitigated
bookworm, smart kid, but needs to get out more often (and she
has been considering dragging him out, but he is oblivious to
her plans...) (she has also has her eye on him for the junior
prom....and,as usual, he doesn't have a clue. Poor guy).
Because of her lower middle class upbringing she has a bit of
distrust for the "rich kids" - and the times she has competeted
with the Leech academy (her words) has solidified that into an
abiding dislike for them.

"Well it will be in a moment - Mark just took off one of her legs
with that greatsword of his" Chiisai remarked.
"Typical male. Always thinks that brute force will win over manuverability".
Jenny replied.
"There is no problem that a sufficient application of firepower
won't solve" Chiisai shot back smugly.
"I'll give you both something to think about if you don't keep
down - I'm trying to watch Sue finish of Mark" Isa cut into the
budding arguement.
"What? Ohmygod she coded an entangler into that thing." Chiisais
attention was back on the match.
"Told you, you over traditional asian you." Jenny smiled.
"One of these days, Jenny, I am going to take you out"
"Not on your life, boy, I already have a boyfriend."
"You know what I mean" he growled back. |
